What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments and Reviews

When visitors leave comments or reviews on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact Forms

You may be presented with opportunities to voluntarily provide us with information, such as your e-mail address or other information about yourself.  While we endeavor to keep information that we retain on our users to a minimum, it is occasionally necessary to keep a record of some information, such as e-mail addresses and user names, in order to provide better customer support. We do not share this information with anyone else, unless we are required to do so by law.

In order to provide a better user experience, we may conduct polls or ask you to voluntarily provide information so that we may learn how to improve our services.  We may share findings of these studies with third parties, but not single user responses or any information about any specific user.

We may use the information you provide in an attempt to contact you, if necessary.

Cookies

When you visit this website, your visit is tracked by a cookie.  A cookie is a small data file with a unique identifier that allows us to keep track of how many people are visiting our site, how long you spend on the site, and what content is the most popular.  The cookie does not include any personal information, and by itself may not be used to identify anyone.

Your browser was designed for cookies, and almost every major site uses them.  It is a standard part of how the internet works.

If you are concerned about the use of cookies, it is still possible to browse our sites with cookies disabled.  However, some parts of our site may not work properly if cookies are blocked, such as video downloads.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for up to 60 days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

Embedded content from other websites

This site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

To better serve our users, we may collect data about how long you spend on our sites, what pages you visit, browser information, and operating system information.  Typically, this information is correlated with your IP address.  This allows us to determine how many users we are getting and what content is most popular.

Specifically, we use WordPress Analytics provided by Jetpack and Google Analytics to produce our visitor analytic reports.

Who we share your data with

Payment Processors

We may send some information about you to our payment processor.  We only send the information required to complete the transaction.  Depending on your purchase, this could be very little information, but it could include your name, e-mail, and other information you provided.

Law Enforcement

We will do our best to fully comply with any request for information by law enforcement upon receiving a warrant.  As we are not equipped to judge the validity of a warrant, we will assume any actual warrant to be valid and comply with it as best as we are able.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment or review, the comment or review and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.  IP addresses and e-mail addresses may also be screened against lists of known bad actors to prevent criminal access or activities.

Certain data may also be sent to our payment processor and our analytics trackers only as far is required to complete transactions and gather analytic data.

Your contact information

Contact information you provide us may be stored indefinitely and is used for customer support purposes.  We do not share your contact information with third parties unless required to do so for security or legal purposes.

Additional information

How we protect your data
User data is only stored on an encrypted server.  If you have contacted us via e-mail or a contact form, your e-mail address may be saved on a desktop computer that is accessed only via a password.

What data breach procedures we have in place
In the event of a large-scale data breach, we will immediately post a notice to our website alerting users and provide as much detail about the breach as possible.  If it is feasible, we will also attempt to directly contact users who may have been affected.

For data breaches that only affect a single user, or a small number of users, we will attempt to contact those users to inform them of the breach.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data
A user’s IP data, along with their browser, operating system, and location are combined to produce a “digital fingerprint.”  Certain automated tasks may occur as a result of behavior that originates from a unique fingerprint for security purposes.  This includes blocking access to our server for a period of time, or permanently, if behaviors from a user represent hacking activities.

In the future, we may discover that it is necessary to change this policy.  If that happens, we will do our best to notify you of the change.  However, a notification may not be possible.  Therefore it is your responsibility to monitor this policy for changes.

If you have questions about this policy, please feel free to contact us and ask.
